Officer Chapel was the permanently assigned Buford Georgia beat cop, at the request of city leaders. He was loved by the community and hated by criminals. Chapel headed the Delta Drug Force and was the Captain of the nationally ranked SWAT. Thirty-three times Chapel had been commended for meritorious service by the Gwinnett County Police Department. Most importantly, he was a loving husband and father to an eight year-old son and a five-year-old Daddy's girl. Their world was forever changed on Friday, April 23, when officer Michael Harold Chapel was arrested for the wanton robbery and heinous murder of fifty-three year-old Emogene Thompson.
Chapel has remained in prison these last twenty-eight years, proclaiming as he did on the night of his arrest, "I am telling truth but the truth isn't working." His wife and family remain devoted and determined to vindicate their patriarch's good name. This site, and Henry Ball's Book "Michael Chapel" exposes the truth about the wrongful prosecution and inhumane incarceration of an innocent man.
April 15, 2021 Newly Elected District Attorney, Patsy Austin-Gatson announced the formation of the Convictions Integrity Unit, to take a fresh look at questionable convictions that took place under the twenty-eight year reign of her predecessor, Danny Porter. Please contact Madame District Attorney and ask her to review Chapel's case.
